Olongapo mourns mom's death

Former Olongapo Mayor Amelia Gordon passed away early evening Tuesday. She was 89.

The wake according Senator Gordon's facebook account said that “My mom, Mrs. Amelia Juico Gordon, passed away earlier this evening. The wake will be at Santuario de San Antonio, in Forbes Park, Makati City, beginning tomorrow afternoon. She will then be brought to Olongapo City later this week.”

Senator Gordon also appealed to the public and close friends “In lieu of flowers, donations to the PNRC Olongapo Chapter OR the Olongapo Boys Town and Girls Home c/o PNRC Olongapo would be appreciated. Please pray for the eternal repose of her soul.

His facebook account meanwhile was flooded with commiseration.

Residents hung red ribbons in many parts of the city Monday to wish for her (Amelia Gordon) recover after she was reported to be in critical condition.

According to Mike Pusing, media coordinator for the city, Mrs. Gordon's code name within the Red Cross circle is "red." "This explains the red ribbons all throughout the city," Pusing told the subictimes.com. 

Amelia Gordon was known for her advocacy to protect and promote the welfare of the needy and abandoned children. She led the formation of Iba-Olongapo Catholic Women’s League, Olongapo City Red Cross, Olongapo City Civic Action Group and Olongapo Boy’s Town and Girls Home, organizations that are helping Olongapeños up to the present.

Because of these, Amelia received the Dona Aurora Aragon Medal Award, Silver Jubilee Family Award, Silver Medal Award from the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), 1985 Gintong Ina Award Alay kay Inay, 1993 Gold Humanitarian Service Cross Award, 2000 Centennial woman of the Year Award and 2004 Pearl S. Buck International Award.

Gordon became mayor of the city in 1967 and represented the city in the Batasan Pambansa in 1984.

She is survived by her children -- Veronica "Onnie" Gordon-Lorenzana, Barbara "Bai" Gordon-Delos Reyes, Cecille Gordon-Mullen, Richard "Dick" Gordon, James "Bong" Gordon and Imelda Deza. with reports from subicbayupdater
