694 Wistron worker in Subic loss job

Close to 700 workers of Wistron InfoCom (Philippines) Corporation will be losing their jobs here after its the company’s Mobile System Unit (MSU) plant closed down last week.

In a letter dated July 05, 2010 to SBMA labor center, Maria Teresa Esteban, Wistron Human Resource Manager, said that it was no longer financially feasible to continue doing business and that they ‘decided to cease or close (its)Mobile System Unit (MSU) effective July 05, 2010.

“We would like to notify your good office that those 694 regular employees shall be deemed terminated affective August 5, 2010 on the ground of partial closure.” the letter said.

In an effort to help the displaced workers, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Labor Department conducted a job fair inside the premises of Wistron.

SBMA Labor Department head Severo Pastor in a letter said that the cost of transporting raw material products from North America and Europe to the Philippines for making the handheld radio was much lesser if they locate the said product close to the market area which is America and Europe. Wistron Mexico was awarded the contarct.

He however added that about 700 more employees will remain with Wistron Subic which operate as an International Service Center for all ACER products and will continue to be the center of their Research and Development Programs.

Esteban added that the company will grant its affected employees a separation pay equivalent to one month salary per year and all remaining compensations and benefits due to the workers.
