British in illegal firearm case arrested in Olongapo

Police authorities arrested in Olongapo City a British national who was allegedly involve in a smuggling attempt of firearms worth P5 million in Port of Bataan last year.

Authorities identified the British national as Captain Bruce Anthony Jones.

Criminal charges against 37 people was filed by Custom Commissioner Napoleon Morales including Jones who were allegedly involved in the smuggling of Indonesian-made firearms worth P5 million that authorities foiled in the Port of Mariveles, Bataan last August 2009.

Authorities got a tip that Jones together with others included in the charge sheet was spending time in Olongapo.

Armed with the warrant of arrest against the suspects issued by Justice Juanito Castañeda of the Court of Tax Appeals, Insp. Rommel Macatlang of the Criminal Investigation ang Detection Group and Manila based policemen proceeded to the Palm Tree Beach Resort in Barangay Barreto in Thursday.

Authorities nabbed Jones when he was about to board his van, a caliber .45 pistol found in his possession.

Upon further inspection of his van police saw a Sporter 5.56mm rifle, an Olympic Arms 5.56mm rifle; two magazines for 5.56mm ammunition and three medium-sized heat-sealed transparent plastic which was later confirmed as methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu.

Before the arrest Jones’ lawyer, Joe Frank Zuñiga, allegedly sent surrender feelers to the BOC, but Jones did not surrender. Formal charges has been filed against Jones.
