Maya? Pabalik? Tengku!

He has been around since I was a kid, his smile and antics I can still remember, he makes me smile whenever i imagine his face and he reminds me that im from Olongapo city.

I remember his famous line “maya? balik?” which he would say every time he doesn’t get any change (money) from people he ask for.

In the growing and fast phase changes in Olongapo City, Daddy daddy’s popularity seemed to lose its ground in some point. For some time his buddy, Tyson took over.

Just like any tandem or group, Tyson chose to go solo, bring his struts in front of any speaker with music he can find along Magsaysay Ave and Rizal Ave. If there was a grand opening he was there. He even had his own boom box as back up.

With his shorts tucked in and pulled up near his chest he would dance and make his moves to the sound of the beat.

daddy daddy(If you don’t recognize his face or know his name, you ain’t from Olongapo City, The most recent photo of Daddy daddy taken yesterday (January 11, 2010), his smile never fade, jolly as ever. Photo by David Bayarong)

Last week I saw Daddy daddy again, he was chasing some Columban students along 1st street and Jungle.

And I saw him again in one of the most popular networking site, facebook, he even has a video that is spreading trough the internet, a nice one too.

He even had a picture and was even posting some status in his FB account, well it was obvious that it wasn’t really Daddy daddy who created that account.

But hey his FB made me smile, and made me write this story, he has more than a hundred fans now in just a couple of days.

I don’t know his age, nor were he goes home after his ruff day in the streets.

Despite his metal illness I don’t know if that’s the right term (sorry for that in advance) I never heard a report that he was involve in any violence, well maybe I saw him sometime ago chasing some kids with his toy gun but thats all.

He is kind, saying ‘Tengku’ when ever you give him food or ‘barya’, if you had a car he would even act as your parking attendant but hey you know you wont follow his ‘chege, chege, alayo pa’ instructions or you will be ending up in a garage or in front of a blue boy explaining that it was Daddy daddy fault you bumped the vehicle in front of you or at the back.

Im now 32, maybe his older than me, but he is still up to his old self to date. His former job as a parking attendant has been taken over by parking attendant from the city hall. Dati piso lang kay Daddy daddy ok na sa kanya, may Tengku ka pa, kung wala naman sasabihin niya lang maya? pabalik? Sabay muwestra ng daliri nya paikot.

If your really from Olongapo you must know him, or else your not really from the city.

The City hall is new, the Americans left, we had Subic, we have plenty of fast food chains, we have a mall, tons of changes in the city, we have a son of Olongapo who was elected as Senator and two presidential candidate for the 2010 election, but Daddy daddy you cannot forget, to me he is part of our history, part of my life, part of your life and part of the city.

He is Daddy daddy, a kind kid inside an old mans body.

Oh and lets not forget the ‘Ayabyu’ line of Daddy daddy, pilyong bata talaga.

Thanks for sharing this to us, yes indeed “he” is a reminder of us of being someone from Gapo. I spent my high school in columban college and its a daily scene for us to see him on way to school and back home along magsaysay drive. We use to get irritated to him back them, but now seeing his pictures, video in FB makes me smile, maybe it because his the only thing that among the changes on us not been “corrupted” or stained. I wish for his long, healthy life! and to see him again this year during our family holiday in July (wanted to take photo of him with me and my dutch family for remembrance…)
lovely and more power, hope you have more “inspirational” stories like this to write/share with the public.

we love noel!! He comes to our church.. Its so funny when pastor says good evening, noel always answers “morning” cause its easier for him to say.. He claps out of time and he always looks for piso after church but i love him.. He makes me smile..

I saw him in the night market the other night and i saw a brat hitting him on the head.. I chased the little guy till i caught him and told him if i ever saw him lay a hand on daddy daddy again i’d subong him to the police! The people where watching me threatening this kid and no doubt feeling sorry for the kid but i knew i did the right thing.. we should always defend those who cannot defend themselves.. Daddy daddy is kind.. he deserves our kindness..

thanks for posting this article mr. bayarong. so much memories in olongapo and daddy daddy is one of the people youll remember if we talk about how fun it was back in the days, people learned to love and accept him, one thing that i love about gapo is that we never see them special people differently and how that genuine smile comes out whenever we give them our food or pennies… this guy lives in 3rd street near silahis i had the chance to talk to his parents and siblings some of his brothers are tricycle drivers and i think one of his sister is working abroad i remember his dad wearing this thick gold chain on his neck and a funny guy too.
